UTA Bookstore to host Grad Finale, offer discounted regalia

As Mavericks approach spring graduation on May 9, here are some important deadlines and events to keep in mind before walking the stage. Jonikka Davis, associate director of communication and marketing for the Division of Student Affairs, said graduating students should be aware of the Grad Finale event held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 4 through 6 at the UTA Bookstore. At Grad Finale, students can find commencement items for discounted prices, inquire about cords and purchase diploma frames, regalia and other souvenirs. Jostens will be on site with official class rings, announcements, and invitations, while members of Flash Photography take graduation pictures. Representatives from various departments will be on site to answer any questions students might have, according to the event calendar. “There is also a plan to have some music to keep it really festive as well,” Davis said. “There will be opportunities for graduates to connect with one another, we’re hoping that Blaze will even put in an appearance. I think it’ll be a good time.” The deadline for spring graduation applications closed Monday. Students can continue to apply, but will be charged an additional $60 late fee on top of the $40 application fee, according to UTA’s website. Once the graduation application is processed and approved, students must log into Tassel, the commencement software UTA uses, and enter all of their information relevant to graduation. Once on the software, students can add whether or not they’re planning on walking the stage, how many guest tickets they need, if graduates need Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations and more. Tassel profiles should be completed by April 7. “All of the important things to kind of [get] ready for that big day are taken care of in Tassel,” Davis said. “It’s a one stop shop for all things commencement.” If graduating Mavericks have any questions, she said they can check UTA’s commencement website. For further inquiries, students can send an email to gradteam@uta.edu. Another event graduates can attend is the MavGrad Celebration on May 8. Davis said students will have the chance to mingle with one another, reflect on their experiences and celebrate their achievements the day before commencement ceremonies. Davis encourages graduates who are available to attend the commencement ceremony to go and take advantage of the experience. “It is a chance to come together one more time with other Mavericks who are celebrating a similar milestone,” she said. “It’s a chance to say ‘thank you’ to your friends and family and your own personal community that has supported you to that point.” There are opportunities for UTA graduates after walking, including support for alumni-owned businesses and community service partnerships, facilitated by Alumni Relations. The Career Development Center is also open to graduates, assisting them in their career journey. She said they encourage alumni to stay engaged with the campus, continue leveraging resources, maintain communication with the campus community, as well as staying informed about opportunities and building connections. “Once a Maverick, always a Maverick, so we certainly have opportunities for our forever graduates,” Davis said. @taylor._.sansom news-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu
