Celebrate Black History Month at UTA with concert, festival and movie night

To honor Black History Month, the Intercultural Student Engagement Center is partnering with various organizations to host events across campus. Student Activities director Alexis Lambert said hosting Black History Month events on campus helps signify the importance of the specific population of people who contributed to the greater success of all Americans. “I think that's the beauty of it on this campus, is that at certain points of the year, we can see target populations that are reflected on our own campus celebrated and really highlighted for their contributions,” Lambert said. She said such events and months of celebration contribute to the campus’ diversity. “I think that's unique, to be able to come to college and have this awakening, if you will, but then be surrounded with the same people that you're about to enter the world with,” Lambert said. Here are some events to look out for ahead of February. NPHC Kickoff The National Pan-Hellenic Council will kick off Black History Month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m Monday at Brazos Park. If there is inclement weather, the event will move to the Red River Room in the University Center. CAAS Power Hour The Center for African American Studies will host an educational session on soul food and a cooking demonstration from chef Rodrick Finch at 1 p.m. Feb. 5 in the UC Red River/Concho Room. Participants will share a meal and learn about the history of soul food. NPHC Late Night Breakfast NPHC is hosting a late night breakfast 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 6 in the U.C. Carlisle Suite.
