President Donald Trump’s administration rescinded a memo from the Office of Management and Budget on Wednesday that froze federal grants and loans.
OMB released Memorandum M-25-13 on Monday, sparking widespread confusion about federal financial assistance. The U.S. Department of Education confirmed on their Instagram @federalstudentaid, that direct loans, pell grants and other federal student aid funds provided to individual students would not be impacted by the pause.
“At this point, there is no impact to students receiving traditional federal financial aid that falls under the provisions of Title IV of the Higher Education Act as Amended,” said Karen Krause, UTA’s executive director of the Office of Financial Aid, Scholarships and Veteran Benefits Processing, in an email.
For U.S. citizen and permanent resident students, Krause said they should proceed as normal and complete the 2025-2026 FAFSA form before UTA’s priority application deadline March 1. Krause said financial aid staff is available to help students who have questions during office hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
She said the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will continue to monitor the situation to provide accurate information for students and families.
“There is no effect at this time, but students can certainly contact their elected representatives and Senators to express concern,” Krause said. “The more our elected officials hear from students who could see a negative outcome, the better their voices will be heard.”
