UTA men’s basketball (11-11, 4-4) extended its winning streak to four games, defeating Utah Tech University (6-16, 2-5) 73-71 on Saturday at College Park Center.
Decked out in all-black threads to mark the start of Black History Month, the Mavericks dealt with adversity early in the first half. Points were hard to come by, including a four-minute stretch without scoring a single point.
UTU’s zone defense blocked UTA’s offense, forcing many difficult, end-of-the-shot-clock attempts.
“We didn’t come out like we wanted to, once again, but we kept fighting,” head coach KT Turner said. He was happy with how the team fought this week despite players being out due to injury or sickness.
Senior guard Brandyn Talbot provided a spark off the bench with eight points in the first half, keeping the Mavericks attached into halftime.
Turner pointed to the Trailblazers scoring 27 second chance points as an area of concern, but acknowledged the differential of size during rotations.
The Mavericks came out with much better energy defensively, leading to easy buckets in transition. UTA sparked a 9-2 run that forced UTU’s head coach to call a timeout, but was finding itself in another game coming down to the wire.
Junior forward Raysean Seamster tied the game with a free throw with only 4:22 left to go at 61 a piece.
Less than a minute remaining in the game, Turner called a full timeout to draw up a potential game-sealing play while they were ahead, 67-66. The Mavericks capitalized with junior guard Brady Robinson assisting graduate guard Jaden Wells for a corner three, putting the team up by four with 34 seconds left.
The Mavericks weren’t out of the woods yet, but thanks to clutch free throw shooting, UTA escaped with the win.
“I felt confident, I trust my coaches and my coaches trust me and I trust my teammates as well,” Wells said. “Even though we had a slow start, we found a way to get through it.”
Wells finished the game with 15 points, all coming from the 3-point range. The Mavericks had five players finish in double figures to offset big Trailblazer scoring outputs.
The team is now in the thick of Western Athletic Conference standings, improving to 4-4 in league play after losing the first four.
“We’re just enjoying the process of all this, even the close games, we’re getting better,” Turner said.
UTA will look to extend their win streak 7 p.m. Thursday at Utah Valley University after previously losing to the Wolverines on a buzzer-beater Jan. 16. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
