UT Arlington outlasts California Baptist University in overtime thriller

The men’s basketball team (12-13, 5-6) ended its two-game losing streak after defeating California Baptist University (12-12, 5-5) with a thrilling overtime win Thursday, 82-79. Faculty and staff filled College Park Center as UTA’s men’s tennis team received its Western Athletic Conference championship rings. The Mavericks had trouble defending the Lancers early on, allowing 26 of CBU’s 39 points in the half to come in the paint. Head coach KT Turner said he wasn’t happy with the team’s start but was proud of its response to the challenge in a halftime deficit. UTA showed more fight coming out of halftime including a whopping 20-2 run, helping the Mavericks regain the lead for the first time since the opening basket. “Today, we were extremely connected coming into the second half,” graduate guard Darius Burford said. “Especially around that nine-minute mark, we were like, ‘This is the run we have to have,’ and we see what happened.” Junior forward Raysean Seamster was a catalyst in the Mavericks’ comeback, imposing his will on Lancer defenders. He scored 15 points in the second half, the most of any player on the court. “We had to fight back for it,” Seamster said. “I always wanted to fight with my guys. I was out there still fighting, no matter what. Tired or not. ‘I have to fight for them,’ that’s all I was thinking about.” Seamster finished the game with 29 points, a career-high, and eight rebounds. As the second half winded down, the Mavericks led 67-65 and were awarded possession with 14 seconds left, after officials overturned an out-of-bounds call. However, CBU tied the game with four seconds remaining after a brutal UTA turnover under their own basket. Unable to get a quality look at the end of regulation, the teams headed to overtime. Seamster continued his dominance in overtime, scoring nine of the team’s 15 points during the period. With clutch free throws and defensive stops, UTA pulled away with the victory. The Mavericks will host Grand Canyon University at 2 p.m. Saturday for the first time this season. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+. @babyboimatt sports-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu
