UT Arlington women’s basketball scores sixth-straight win in conference play

UTA women’s basketball (14-7, 9-1) extended their six-game win streak, routing Seattle University (3-19, 0-9) 80-54 on Saturday at College Park Center. Prior to tipoff, senior guard Taliyah Clark was recognized for reaching 1,000 career points in the team’s Jan. 25 matchup against Abilene Christian University. Clark, an SU transfer, said it was a big moment for her. “Especially being at home, getting the ball, everybody’s cheering for me, it’s pretty great,” she said. “Not everybody gets to get 1,000 career points.” Clark finished the game with 18 points and seven rebounds, with four threes made and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. The Lady Mavericks earned a wire-to-wire win fresh off a nail-biter against Utah Valley University on Thursday. Head coach Shereka Wright said she was proud of how the team came out and found a way to succeed. “Those type of wins propel you into late February, March because you’re going to be in games and situations where there could be a crucial turnover or a crucial basket that you got to get,” Wright said. The Redhawks did their best to keep themselves attached in the first half, partly due to good 3-point shooting and a couple of scoring droughts by the Lady Mavericks. UTA maintained a 34-26 lead heading into halftime. However, UTA came out of the half firing on all cylinders, going on an 8-0 run to start the third quarter, led by Clark and fifth-year forward Koi Love. The Lady Mavericks’ stifling defense caused issues for the Redhawks, leading to easy points in transition. “Everybody’s tired right now, so we just try to find ways to push it,” Clark said. “Me and Koi, we do a good job giving everybody energy.” Love led all scorers with 19 points and added seven rebounds. Love was one of four Lady Mavericks to score double figures. UTA women’s basketball remains undefeated at CPC, holding a perfect 10-0 with only two more home games left. The Lady Mavericks will begin a three-game road trip 8 p.m. Thursday when heading to face California Baptist University. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+. @babyboimatt sports-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu
