UTA baseball (2-1) began its spring campaign Friday with a shutout win against UT-San Antonio (1-2), 5-0 at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Led by dominant pitching and scoring outbursts in the sixth and seventh innings, UTA secured its third opening day shutout in program history.
Head coach Mike Trapasso said he was impressed with how sophomore pitcher Caylon Dygert was able to set the tone.
“You look at an experienced guy like Caylon Dygert, he set the tone. Pitchers always set the tone,” Trapasso said. “While some of the new guys, offensively, are trying to get their feet wet and get the butterflies out of their system, you have to put up zeros, and we did that.”
Dygert pitched 7.1 innings and gave up as many hits as he had strikeouts.
Freshman outfielder Cade Dodson showed no signs of first-game jitters, leading the way for the Mavericks with three hits on four plate appearances.
Dodson scored the opening run for the Mavericks in what turned out to be a busy sixth inning. The Mavericks led 3-0 at the end of the sixth, with each run coming after UTA had already collected two outs.
“It felt pretty good to get the first win,” Dodson said. “I think we’ve been waiting probably for a month to play somebody new. I just feel like the team came out and played good.”
Graduate outfielder Maxwell Mims said the team made adjustments to previous at bats that allowed for the scoring runs.
“I was just following Doddie’s lead, and I’m happy we got something rolling, so I was very excited,” Mims said.
Trapasso referred to the game as a “pillow fight” through the first five innings before Mims and company were able to get their bats going.
UTA added two more runs in the seventh inning by virtue of Dodson, Mims and junior outfielder Jake Martinez.
The Mavericks won the series with a 7-4 victory Saturday despite faltering in the final game Sunday, 6-3.
The team will face Oklahoma University at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 2025 College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field. Tickets can be purchased online or available to stream on ESPN+.
