UTA men's basketball falls in Senior Day game to Abilene Christian University

UTA men’s basketball (13-16, 6-9) fell short to Abilene Christian University (15-14, 7-7), 70-59 on Saturday at College Park Center. The Mavericks celebrated Senior Day by honoring graduates and seniors with a special pregame ceremony. The team gifted a framed jersey to each of the six players recognized alongside family and friends. UTA got off to a slow start offensively and struggled on the offensive glass, giving up 11 second-chance points off 10 offensive rebounds by ACU. The Mavericks trailed 14-3 at the second media timeout. Head coach KT Turner said a lack of defensive effort, bad shooting and rebounding were reasons for the slow start. “That’s the cardinal sin,” Turner said. “Giving offensive rebounds up. We talked about that before the game. We got to rebound.” However, UTA fought its way back into the game, led by a trio of 3-pointers by graduate forward Diante Smith, cutting ACU’s lead to four. The Wildcats scored five unanswered points to close the half leading 32-23. After the break, ACU scored the first five points of the second half before graduate forward Lance Ware took matters into his own hands. Ware went on a personal 10-0 scoring run to bring the game within four. Ware said he took advantage of post-up opportunities set for him to not only score, but find his teammates out of a double-team. Ware finished with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season. Turner expressed high praise for Ware. “He’s the best big man in this conference. Hands down,” Turner said. Down the stretch, UTA tied the game a few times, but couldn’t overcome ACU’s wire-to-wire lead. The Wildcats went on a 9-0 run to seal the game. “We started really playing hard in the second half. I thought we really fought,” Turner said. “But, we got to play for two halves.” The Mavericks will play their final game of the season 7 p.m. March 8 at California Baptist University. The game will be available to stream at ESPN+. @babyboimatt sports-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu
