UTA Campus Recreation hosts annual Rec Day at Maverick Activities Center

UTA Campus Recreation held its annual Rec Day on Tuesday at the Maverick Activities Center, providing a day’s worth of fun for students. Attendees participated in various activities including minute-to-win-it tournaments, group exercise classes, sport club demonstrations and more. Giveaways and free food were also available. Josh Hale, assistant director of sports programs, said Rec Day is a celebration highlighting what Campus Recreation has to offer. Hale said the department is a member of NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, formerly called the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association. The organization is dedicated to developing collegiate recreation. “NIRSA was established many years ago during this time of year. So now what we do is we celebrate this day, and a lot of other campuses across the country do the same thing in celebration of the establishment,” he said. Civil engineering sophomore Christopher Mwemera works at Shake Smart, who in collaboration with Rec Day handed out free smoothie samples and snacks for attendees. During his free time, he said he participated in a skills challenge and lined up for a free shirt. Rec Day’s final event was the annual Polar Bear Plunge, and Hale said over 100 students registered for it. Aerospace engineering sophomore Pranav Ravula was one of them. “I’m really looking forward to the cold plunge in the swimming pool outside,” Ravula said. “It is really cold outside today so I think it’s a perfect day and a perfect meeting for a cold plunge.” Rec Day allows students to come together and participate in activities and events, something Campus Recreation aims to do through recreational and leisure opportunities. “I feel like it’s a great way to meet new people and also keep everyone unified on the campus, ” Ravula said. @tdreevess sports-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu
