UTA men’s basketball (13-14, 6-7) defeated Tarleton State University (11-17, 6-7) 67-57 on Saturday night at College Park Center.
CPC was electric from start to finish with 5,183 fans packing the park, marking the seventh-highest attendance in men's basketball history for the Mavs at the CPC.
“I really want to thank the fans for coming out tonight. They were big time,” head coach KT Turner said. “They really helped us win this game, and they were huge. I want to give them a special thank you.”
The Mavericks got off to a slow start, allowing the Texans to go on a 10-1 run to begin the game. UTA missed its first 10 shots from the field before graduate guard Jaden Wells sank a three to end the drought.
Turner said the team lacked energy starting the game, but he was optimistic that the team would eventually make shots.
UTA fought back at the end of the half, guided by an 8-1 run and a three from sophomore guard Kade Douglas to cut the halftime deficit to 29-23.
The Air Elite Dunkers dazzled fans with high-flying action at the half.
Junior forward Raysean Seamster and graduate guard Darius Burford turned the tide for the Mavericks right out of the break. The two accounted for a 9-0 run by UTA, earning it the first lead of the night, 32-30.
Most of the second half was a back-and-forth affair until UTA pulled away late. Burford, Seamster and graduate forward Lance Ware were catalysts in closing the door on TSU, winning the game 67-57.
Burford provided a couple of much-needed baskets down the stretch for the Mavericks to maintain their lead. He scored a team-high 13 points, eight rebounds and dished three assists.
“I’m just trying to do whatever it takes to win. That’s just my mindset,” Burford said.
Seamster iced the cake with two thunderous dunks, sending the crowd into a frenzy both times. He finished the game with 11 points.
Senior guard Brandyn Talbot also played a massive role in the Mavericks’ win, scoring 12 points off the bench.
“One thing I saw this week, he was really, really locked in in practice. Especially on defense,” Turner said about Talbot. “I just saw something special.”
The night was capped off with a postgame concert featuring rapper K CAMP.
Arlington resident Kyndell Constantine, 17, said he’s been a fan of the artist since he was young when his mother would play his music.
Constantine, who was invited by a friend, said the concert was absolutely worth his while.
“It’s a nice environment. It’s very welcoming and all in all, just good vibes,” he said.
The Mavericks will hit the road 8 p.m. Thursday to face Grand Canyon University. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
