UTA’s baseball team swings into the season this weekend for the first time under head coach Mike Trapasso. The team will play a three-game series against UT-San Antonio opening 4 p.m. Friday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks finished the 2024 season on the losing end of a 34-22 overall record but boasted a winning record in Western Athletic Conference play, finishing 16-15. With Trapasso at the helm, the team looks to revert to winning ways.
Trapasso joined UTA as an assistant coach in 2023 and an already decorated coach at other stops. Trapasso spent nearly two decades as the head coach at the University of Hawaii, where he won national coach of the year in 2006. With coaching experience dating back to 1991, Trapasso said he looks to replicate his success here with the Mavericks.
In the weeks leading up to the season opener, Trapasso said he’s focused on building a consistent, culture-driven baseball team.
“Our four pillars of success for our team are total commitment, leadership, maturity and intelligence,” he said.
Sophomore pitcher Nicholas Robb said defense has been an emphasis under Trapasso and that he has been working on it all offseason. Junior infielder Xavier Melendez added that the team has worked to eliminate errors that get them defeated.
Trapasso said that without everyone buying into the team or leadership, it's a rudderless ship.
“You can have a leader of the pitching staff, leader of the position players, leader in the weight room,” Trapasso said. “If kids take ownership of their team, you'll have multiple leaders in different aspects and facets of the team.”
The Mavericks spent weeks preparing for the upcoming game with countless practices and weeks of preseason scrimmages, eager to show their efforts to their fans and each other.
“The scrimmaging gets old, and it's time to start,” Trapasso said. “The one thing we haven't seen yet, through our fall and our spring practices, is how guys react under scoreboard pressure.”
The Mavericks’ regular season will run until May 17 with some notable opponents scheduled along the way. Following their series against UT-San Antonio, the Mavericks will compete in the 2025 College Baseball Series, facing Oklahoma University at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at Globe Life Field.
