Dr. Jason Shelton Colloquium

Monday, March 31, 2025 12:00–1:00 PM
  • Location
    University Hall, 432
  • Description
Join us for the second Center for Theory Colloquium of spring 2025. Jason Shelton, professor of sociology, will present his new book “The Contemporary Black Church: The New Dynamics of African American Religion.” The colloquium will be held at 12 p.m. on March 31 in Room 432 of University Hall.

    Abstract:

Recent decades have ushered in a profound transformation within Black America, characterized by an explosion of religious diversification and individualism. African Americans are departing from historic denominations that anchored the historic Black Church, which has fueled a rising number of “nones.” The Contemporary Black Church shows religion and politics are dramatically changing in Black America, which raises major questions about the future of African American unity and the sense of community.
