UTA puts it in park, cooking up diverse dining options with food trucks

Students lined up Wednesday between Trimble Hall and the UTA Planetarium, each awaiting a unique meal option from two food trucks. The location, now known as The Park, has become a student staple for dining. “It’s good exposure for the local food trucks,” said James Chew, Chartwells Higher Ed resident district manager. “Often, those food trucks have other restaurants, too, and so it’s great to get them exposure.” UTA has several food trucks in rotation with two visiting campus 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday at The Park. The food trucks give students more variety in dining options on campus. Because of the University Center’s upcoming construction, Chew said he wanted to have food options easily accessible to students. “It’s really getting that process polished now so that when the craziness happens later, we have it in place,” he said. This week, students were offered a variety of dishes from Twiggy’z tacos and elotes to Kalachandji’s samosas and dosas with chutney. In August, O’Desi aroma replaced Kalachandji’s at the University Center’s The Market, serving a variety of halal meats and vegetarian dishes. Chew said O’Desi aroma was positively received by students, but Maverick Dining wanted to continue its partnership with Kalachandji’s. “They’re excited about still being able to offer their products to the students because they have a very good, loyal following as well,” Chew said. He said students reacted positively to the food trucks, especially Twiggy’z. During a trial run, students loved the food and menu variety, with options like tacos and burgers. Because of its popularity, Twiggy’z was put on a regular schedule and will be appearing every Wednesday in February. “We had a line like no other the first day there,” he said. Twiggy’z owner Frank Leija said he cooks and seasons his own meat on-site. Every week Twiggy’z has been at The Park, students ask if he’ll be back the next week and some even reach out to him through Instagram. “It feels good to get the feedback and put a smile on people’s faces,” Leija said. Twiggy’z is affordable and fresh, compared to many other restaurants that have their food precooked, he said. “I was smelling it and I was like, ‘I have to try it,’” architectural engineering freshman Shawn Joseph said. This was Joseph’s first time visiting the food trucks, and he ordered chicken tacos from Twiggy’z. After trying them, he said they were really good. Twiggy’z will return to The Park with HurryBack Cajun from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 12 between Trimble Hall and the planetarium.
