‘Work’s not done’: UTA volleyball secures spot in WAC tournament finals, remains undefeated

UTA’s volleyball players felt the rising tension with each passing moment of their semifinal match. “Point by point” was the team’s mantra from the start. Undefeated in conference play all season, the Mavericks were on the brink of their first conference final in years. The Lancers weren’t going down without a fight, but players remained focused on one thing. Point by point. The No. 1 team (28-2, 16-0) defeated No. 5 California Baptist University (8-22, 7-9) 3-2 Friday at College Park Center in a thrilling five-set matchup. The victory marks UTA’s 19th consecutive victory. With the volleyball team’s historic season on the line, players delivered when it mattered most and punched a ticket to their first championship appearance in over 20 years. “[It’s] so surreal. I just can't stress enough how much fight we had, how much belief we had in each other,” graduate outside hitter Brianna Ford said. “At points yes, it was scary, scary as hell in the fourth set whenever it was neck and neck the whole time, but we never lost belief that we were gonna pull off the win.” Ford said the team always leans on each other, planning to continue to do so in Saturday’s game. The Lancers put the Mavericks on their heels early, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. In a matter of minutes, UTA responded with a run to tie the game 5-5. Both teams traded points but midway through CBU raced to an 8-0 run, securing the opening set, 25-16. Freshman outside hitter Sjakkie Donkers led the Mavericks in set one with three kills and three digs. After a late timeout to regroup, UTA pulled away late in the game to even the score, 25-18. “We're a team that rises to the occasion,” Ford said. “I just wanted to make sure that everyone was coming with me with the fire that I had. I was looking everybody in the eye, I was yelling at their face and yeah, I just love the intensity in that.” Despite their strong response, the Mavericks lost momentum in set three, struggling to find a rhythm. Though they fought hard, Lancers took the lead, 25-15. Down 2-1 heading into the fourth set, Ford said nobody was giving up. It’s always been a battle against CBU and the team was focused on fighting back, she said. “Lots of highs and lows with this one. It felt like one of those matches where really every step was challenging,” head coach J.T. Wenger said. “The staircase was very steep, and we found a way to still overcome that.” It was one of those days where the Lancers capitalized on their opportunities and UTA had plays that didn’t go their way, Wenger said. Despite the setback, the team responded when it mattered most. Heading into set four, the team felt the gravity of the moment, but once settled in, everybody found good offensive sequences and built off of it, he said. After a few scares, UTA won a thrilling set in doubles, 27-25. Three Mavericks recorded double-doubles, with Ford leading the team with 29 kills and 14 digs. Graduate setter Mollie Blank recorded 49 assists and 17 digs, and Donkers contributed 15 kills and 12 digs. Criminal justice junior Karrington Thurman said the game was exhilarating. Her emotions were up and down throughout the match, but she enjoyed the atmosphere. “The team has grown together a lot and independently,” Thurman said. “They showed up when they need to everytime.” Over two hours into the game, fans rose to their feet, filling the arena with chats of “UTA” to close out the match. “Work’s not done. One more,” Ford said. She and her teammates will return to the arena with the same sentiment. Point by point. UTA volleyball will be back for the championship match 6 p.m. Saturday against No. 2 Grand Canyon University at College Park Center.
