UT Arlington women's tennis takes loss against Texas Christian University

The women’s tennis team (4-4) fell to Texas Christian University (5-3) 4-0 on Wednesday at the UTA Tennis Center. UTA was unable to overcome TCU’s doubles win, falling 0-1 before singles took place. Despite the loss, head coach Diego Benitez said he believed the match could’ve gone in UTA’s favor. “I thought the girls really stepped up,” Benitez said. “We were actually pretty close to turning it around and getting a W. So overall, pretty good confidence boost for them as well.” After losing the first set 6-0, senior Mialy Ranaivo bounced back with a near-perfect second set 6-1. Taking note of her opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, she said she was able to adjust her strategy after the first set. “It was mostly to have more height on the ball because she was getting everything pretty good between her shoulder and waist,” Ranaivo said. “My goal was to keep her playing high over her shoulders.” The final set was tied 5-5 in a back-and-forth battle before the match was stopped after TCU reached four points. Ranaivo’s match was one of three unfinished sets. UTA will look to its game 2 p.m. Tuesday in Denton against the University of North Texas. @babyboimatt sports-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu
