UTA volleyball announces new head coach from Pacific University

UTA volleyball announced Tania Schatow as the team’s next head coach Wednesday. Schatow will be the eighth head coach in program history following former head coach J.T. Wenger’s resignation in December. On the heels of one of its best seasons in program history, the team looks to replicate that success with a new face at the helm and a restructured roster. Six players from last year’s team won’t be returning, five of whom were graduate students. Schatow spent last season as Pacific University’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Before her lone season at Pacific University, Schatow spent six seasons in Ohio at Miami University as an assistant coach serving as recruiting and offensive coordinator. She has extensive coaching experience dating back to her time as a professional player overseas. “I am beyond excited to be the next head coach at UT Arlington,” Schatow said in the press release. “I want to thank Jon Fagg for offering me this opportunity and all the amazing people I met on my interview. I can't wait to get in the gym with the team and get to work.” The team and its success is what drew her to UTA, Schatow said. Last season, the Mavericks earned the top seed after going 16-0 in conference play and won the Western Athletic Conference tournament championship — their first WAC championship in program history and the first conference championship over 20 years. Athletics director Jon Fagg said in the press release that Schatow has an incredible vision for the future of UTA volleyball and her recruiting experience will help the program. “We are incredibly excited to welcome Tania to Arlington,” Fagg said. “She separated herself from a very deep and talented candidate pool and I am confident she will be instrumental in continuing our program’s strong momentum from this fall.” A graduate of Louisiana State University, Schatow made the NCAA tournament four times during her tenure, including a Southeastern Conference championship win in 2009. “She has a championship pedigree and is highly respected by her peers and former student-athletes,” Fagg said. “I am looking forward to watching her succeed at a high-level here at UTA.” @babyboimatt sports-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu
