UTA women’s wheelchair basketball team coasted to a 50-14 victory against the Lincolnway Special Recreation Association Lady Hawks on Friday, kicking off a four-game home tournament.
The Lady Movin’ Mavs dominated from the jump, starting a 24-1 run in the opening half. The Hawks didn’t score their first field goal until 3:33 remained in the second quarter in a half where the Mavs gave up only five points.
Head coach Morgan Wood said she was pleased by the team’s overall performance on both sides of the ball.
“Super good team win, a whole lot of ball movement. We ran our whole bench really,” she said. “Offensive and defensive fundamentals are what helped us blow them out of the water.”
LWSRA is a Division II adult program under the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. Sophomore Quinn Meyer said playing teams outside of the college division helps with the team’s experience and versatility. Meyer finished the game with six points and six rebounds.
“It's nice to play against different teams with different styles and to really be versatile,” she said. “So, I think that will help us going on to play against other teams in the college division.”
A notable absence from UTA’s roster was senior captain Elodie Tessier who sat out for precautionary reasons, Wood said.
Graduate student Denise Rodriguez led the Mavericks in scoring with 13 points.
The team has three tournaments before the NIWBT College National Championship Tournament March 25 through 29. The Mavs will host another tournament March 14.
The Lady Movin’ Mavs will conclude their tournament with three games, first of which tips off 3 p.m. Saturday against the Outlaws.
